THE ART AND SCIENCE OF CONCERT HALL ACOUSTICS

VI.    FURTHER WORK

There is much work still to be done in the study of concert hall acoustics.  Some specific areas that should be examined are noted below:

·        effects of the shape of the shell “surrounding” the performers

·        sound on the stage versus the sound in the audience chamber

·        parallel surfaces versus no parallel surfaces

·        sensitivity of results for omni-directional sources versus non-omni-directional sources

·        using an entire orchestra’s worth of sources

·        curved versus flat fronted balconies

·        performance of shoeboxes with different width to length ratios
