This summarizes CFD work that is included in a Research Study Project for AWWARF (American Water Works Association Research Foundation, Project #260; "Water Quality Modelling of Distribution System Storage Facilities").This is a simulation of a 25MG nearly square tank with a nearly diagonal baffle. The criteria of interest is to understand the basic flow field within the tank, and to see if it is highly dependent on operationing conditions (e.g. frequency and flow volume of filling and drawing). Two geometry configurations have been simulated. The water quality goal is to understand mean residence time for water in the tank and the net impact to chlorine concentration.
Brentwood Tank, Constant Fill and Draw Rate. Initial Results (before field data was collected)
Brentwood Tank, July 21 to 23, 1997. 50 Hour Baseline Case (Field Data provides Boundary Conditions)
Modified Baffle Wall Study. Three gaps in Baffle Wall with same BCs as 50 Hour Baseline Case

Comparison of Mixing statistics. (1100x850 GIF 14K).
Mixing in the tank with 3 gaps in the diagonal baffle Wall is significantly quicker than in the case with the continuous baffle wall.
